How to Go Off Grid
The complete beginner's guide. Solar, water, shelter, food, land. Everything you need to know before you unplug.
The 5 Pillars of Off-Grid Living
1. Power
Solar panels + battery bank. A 5kW system with 20kWh storage covers most homes. Cost: $15-25K installed.
2. Water
Well, spring, rainwater harvesting, or a combination. You need 50-100 gallons/day per person.
3. Shelter
Cabin, container home, earthship, tiny house, or yurt. Build for your climate.
4. Food
Garden, chickens, hunting, foraging, and a deep pantry. Start small, learn, expand.
5. Land
5-20 acres minimum. Check zoning, water rights, road access, and solar exposure before buying.
Step 1: Find Your Land
Best states for off-grid: Texas (few restrictions), Tennessee, Missouri, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon. Avoid states with strict building codes that require grid connection.
What to look for: South-facing slope for solar. Year-round water source. Legal road access. Cellular signal (for emergencies). No HOA.
Budget: $20K-100K for 5-20 acres depending on location. Owner financing is common for raw land.
Step 2: Set Up Power
Solar is king for off-grid. A basic system:
Sun → Panels → Charge Controller → Battery → Inverter → Home • Budget: $15-25K
- Panels: 10-20 panels (400W each) = 4-8 kW. Roof-mount or ground-mount.
- Batteries: LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate). 10-30 kWh. This is your biggest cost.
- Inverter: 5-10 kW hybrid inverter. Converts DC to AC.
- Backup: Small generator for extended cloudy periods. Propane is cleanest.
Step 3: Secure Water
- Well: Most reliable. $5-15K to drill. Test water quality.
- Rainwater: Legal in most states (check yours). 1,000 sq ft of roof = 600 gallons per inch of rain.
- Filtration: Berkey filter for drinking. UV sterilizer for the whole house.
Step 4: Build Shelter
Start simple. Many off-gridders start in an RV or tent while building their permanent structure. Don't build your dream home first build something livable, then improve.
Step 5: Grow Food
Year one: container garden + chickens. Year two: expand to raised beds, fruit trees, composting. Year three: you're feeding yourself 30-50% of your food.
